Bypass theme’s lightbox

Hi,
The theme I’m currently using uses the fancybox javascript to get the lightbox effect when clicking on an image. Apparently this doesn’t work with this script, as when I click on an image the lightbox opens but only displays random characters (questions marks and other symbols) instead of the image.

I have tried removing fancybox but the result was that when clicking on an image, the image itself is opened in a new window instead of the lightbox.

Is there any way to bypass this issue? If not, is it possible to make the images unclickable?
