I have not been able to find a way to switch between galleries under the same parent album. If i have an album with 3 child galleries is there a single step way to switch between galleries or even just switching back to the parent album page?

The albums are taxonomies, at the moment there is no settings for that. It can only be control by the theme. You could use a plugin like Breadcrumb NavXT that will add links back to the parent album.
